Totnes is set to come alive on Saturday 27th September for the annual Totnes Heritage Festival – a wonderful free day out for all ages, celebrating the town’s rich history, culture, and community spirit. With more than twenty events across ten of Totnes’ most historic buildings, there’s truly something for everyone to enjoy.


Highlights of the Day

  • Totnes Castle Open Day – Explore the town’s iconic castle, try your hand at archery and lawn games, and enjoy free entry for all TQ9 residents.

  • Guided Walks & Tours – Join Totnes tour guide Kathy Alexander for a Slow Riverside Walk (10am) or a Town History Tour (1.30pm). Booking essential.

  • Totnes Museum – Step inside 450 years of history with a special exhibition celebrating the museum building itself.

  • The Mansion – Interactive fun for all ages, from treasure hunts and old-fashioned sweets to hands-on ceramics and a short film about its school days.

  • St Mary’s Church & Guildhall – Learn about the past and future of St Mary’s, see behind the scenes (pre-booking required), and explore the Guildhall where Oliver Cromwell once sat.

  • Totnes Image Bank & Cinema – Take part in a student workshop, browse fascinating archives, or enjoy the film When Totnes Was a TV Star (4pm).

  • Totnes Archive Exhibition – Discover the stories of Totnesians who helped build America, on show at Birdwood House.

  • Totnes Town Mill & Jamming Station – Live music and exhibitions in this 16th-century gem.

  • Barrel House Ballroom Antiques Fair – Browse antiques while soaking up the atmosphere of this historic venue.


Family Fun & Creativity

From shield-making at the castle to the ‘Minipic’ Young Person’s Art Competition at Totnes Library, there are plenty of opportunities for children and young people to get creative and inspired by local heritage.
