Totnes Heritage Trust has in its possession historically important documents dating back to the 1860s when St Mary's Church underwent major repairs and alterations

The appointed architect was the renowned Victorian Sir Gilbert Scott (pictured). Over 800 buildings were designed or altered by him including the Albert Memorial and the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station.

The historic documents include correspondence between Scott and the Totnes church council dealing with design issues that led to the reordering of the church.

The documents also include fascinating correspondence with the Duke of Somerset.

The Totnes Heritage Trust is holding discussions with the Totnes Image Bank with a view to launching a community heritage engagement project involving the Victorian church papers and photographs leading to a public display.
